Ways birds are important:
Bird Droppings play a key role in spreading nutrients
Birds transport seeds, they munch on their favorite berries and then distribute seed droppings. This does more than multiply the birds food source; the fruiting bodies of an intricate underground fungal network, keeps surrounding trees alive.
Birds are environmentally friendly exterminators. Barn swallows can consume as many as 60 insects an hour. Over an agricultural field, swallows rescue pest-prone crops and leave more food for us.
They’re the ultimate in animal sanitation workers. Vultures are the only vertebrate animal that eat decaying animals exclusively. Without turkey vultures dead animals take 3 times longer to decompose. More rotting stuff means higher risk of disease for humans and other animals.
