Kinship care is a program designed to help support a child who resides outside of his or her own home, either temporarily or for the long term, with a relative (such as an adult sibling, a first cousin, a nephew or niece, an uncle or aunt or a grandparent, among others).
Under 2023 Wisconsin Act 119, like-kin caregivers may also qualify for Kinship Care and is defined as an adult with a significant emotional, family-like bond with a child or their family, who is not legally or biologically related. This may include mentors, neighbors, or coaches, and for Indian children, those identified by the tribe.
